How Much Does a Family Vacation Cost? A Sourced Budget for a Family of Four

Leslie Nics, founder and lead researcher at TravelValueFinder. Figures checked October 24, 2026.

How much does a family vacation cost? For two adults and two children, our sourced model lands between about $780 and $3,270. The gap comes from how you travel, how long you stay and where you sleep.

We built every total line by line from official government sources and named each assumption. We also left out anything we could not source. That shows you exactly where real trips run higher than our numbers. Cost may change due to seasonality, and demand. Verify prices with the sources provided.

People also ask

What is the biggest cost on a family vacation?

Flights, when a family of four has to buy them. Four average domestic tickets cost $1,712 in our model, which is more than seven hotel nights at $791. On a drive trip, driving, lodging and food land within a few dollars of each other.

How much does food cost for a family of four on vacation?

The USDA prices weekly groceries for four at about $260 on its low cost plan and $320 on its moderate plan. Those plans assume every meal is cooked at home, so we added restaurant dinners separately.

Does the type of lodging change the total much?

Yes. Four nights at a campsite cost $120 in our model, while four hotel nights at the federal standard rate cost $452. That one choice moves a trip by $332.

Do Canadian families pay more at US national parks?

At certain heavily visited parks, nonresidents aged 16 and older pay $100 each on top of the entrance fee. A $250 nonresident annual pass covers everyone in one vehicle. Parks outside that list charge the standard fee.

How Much Does a Family Vacation Cost? The Short Answer

For two adults and two children, we calculated about $777 for four nights of driving and camping. The hotel version of that drive costs about $1,376, and a week with flights costs about $3,272. These totals exclude attractions, rental cars and checked bags, so most real trips cost more.

Three choices drive the difference. Flying a family of four adds $1,712 before you book a bed. Sleeping in a hotel instead of a campsite adds $332 over four nights.

Food is the third lever. Cooking most meals keeps five days of food near $186. Each restaurant dinner for four adds $112.

How We Built These Numbers

Every figure comes from an official source and was checked on October 14, 2026. The family is two adults and two children aged 6 to 8 and 9 to 11, matching the USDA reference family. Drive trips cover 4 nights and 600 round trip miles, and the flight trip covers 7 nights.

Getting there uses the IRS standard mileage rate of 76 cents per mile, effective July 1, 2026. That rate covers fuel, wear and depreciation, so your out of pocket fuel cost will be lower.

Flights use the Bureau of Transportation Statistics average domestic itinerary fare of $428 for the first quarter of 2026, times four travelers. That average mixes one way and round trip tickets, so a real round trip can cost more.

Lodging uses the GSA per diem rate of $113 per night for fiscal year 2027, before taxes. Resort areas and big cities often have higher rates. The camping example uses the $30 nightly campsite fee and $15 weekly parking tag from the National Park Service for Great Smoky Mountains.

Food uses the USDA food plan costs from the August 2026 report. We used the low cost plan for camping and the moderate plan for hotel trips. Restaurant dinners use the GSA dinner allowance of $28 per person.

We excluded attractions, rental cars, checked bags, travel insurance, souvenirs and camping gear. All figures are in US dollars unless we say otherwise.

Cost by Trip Type for a Family of Four

This table shows the three trips side by side. Each cell comes from the sources above.

Trip typeGetting thereLodgingFoodFeesEstimated total
Drive and camp, 4 nights$456$120$186$15$777
Drive and hotel, 4 nights$456$452$453$15$1,376
Fly domestically, 7 nights$1,712$791$769Not included$3,272

On the camping trip, driving is the biggest cost at $456. Lodging is only $120 because the family sleeps in a tent.

On the hotel trip, driving, lodging and food all land near $450. That balance means a cheaper room or a shorter drive moves the total quickly.

Four average tickets cost $1,712, more than seven hotel nights at $791.

On the flight trip, airfare takes about half of the total. The flight total also leaves out a rental car and checked bags. Add those before you compare it with a drive trip.

Why Other Estimates Look So Different

Estimates for a family vacation vary by thousands of dollars. Most of the gap comes from five choices. They are trip length, flying versus driving, one room versus two, restaurant versus grocery meals, and the age of the data.

Age matters because prices keep moving. The USDA Economic Research Service reports restaurant prices up 3.4 percent and grocery prices up 2.2 percent in the year to August 2026.

You can adjust our table for your own family. Add $76 for every 100 extra round trip miles. Add $113 for every extra hotel night.

Add about $37 a day for groceries on the low cost plan, or about $46 a day on the moderate plan. Add $112 for every restaurant dinner. Those five adjustments cover most of the difference between our trips and yours.

When a Family Trip Can Stay Under $1,000

Yes, a family of four can take a vacation for under $1,000, but only under specific conditions. In our model, the drive and camp trip costs $777. That leaves $223 of room.

The conditions are simple. You drive rather than fly, and you stay about four nights. You camp or rent a place with a kitchen, and you choose free or low cost activities.

Driving600 miles times $0.76 per mileIRS
Campsite4 nights times $30National Park Service

Food5 days at the low cost plan, $259.80 a week divided by 7USDA
Total$456 + $120 + $15 + $186Our calculation: $777

Every extra 100 round trip miles adds $76. You could add about 290 miles before the trip reaches $1,000.

A campsite instead of a hotel saves $332 over four nights.

Here is when it does not work. Four average domestic tickets cost $1,712, which exceeds the whole budget. Four hotel nights plus the 600 mile drive reach $908 before you buy any food.

A full week of camping on the same drive comes to about $978. That works only if nothing goes wrong. We would not promise a week for under $1,000 unless you camp, drive a short distance and cook most meals.

Camping gear is not in the total, so budget for it if you do not own any. If you want to see where a short drive could take you, read our best national parks to visit.

Family Trip Costs for Canadian Travelers

Canadian families face two extra variables, which are the exchange rate and different park fees. We convert at a planning rate of 1.40 Canadian dollars per US dollar. Check the Bank of Canada daily rate before you budget, because it moves.

At that rate, our $777 camping trip costs about C$1,088. A budget of C$1,000 buys only about US$714. A Canadian family aiming for a thousand dollar US trip needs a shorter drive or a cheaper campsite.

A thousand Canadian dollars buys about US$714.

Driving at home has its own benchmark. The Canada Revenue Agency sets 73 cents per kilometer for the first 5,000 kilometers in 2026. A 600 kilometer round trip comes to C$438.

Admission to Parks Canada places is free for visitors 17 and under. Families pay a daily family and group rate that covers up to seven people in one vehicle. Banff posts C$24.50 for 2026, though rates vary by park.

A family and group Discovery Pass costs C$167.50, so it pays off after about seven days at that daily rate. Free admission ran from June 19 to September 7, 2026, and regular fees apply now.

If you cross the border for a US national park, check the nonresident fee rules first. At a park with a $35 vehicle fee, two adults pay $235 at the gate. The $250 nonresident pass wins only if you visit a second listed park.

Canadian citizens need a valid passport to fly to the United States. Land crossings accept some other documents, so check the Government of Canada travel advice and the CBP travel pages before you book.

We did not model flights from Canadian cities because the BTS fare covers US domestic itineraries only. For lodging, see our guides to where to stay in Montreal, where to stay in Vancouver and cheap hotels in Toronto.

What Building This Model Taught Me

When I laid the three trips side by side, airfare surprised me most. Four average tickets cost more than seven nights of hotel rooms. On any family budget, I would check flight prices before anything else.

The second lesson is that small choices add up. Choosing the low cost grocery plan and skipping restaurant dinners trims food by $267 on a drive trip. A campsite saves another $332.

The third lesson is that standard rates hide a lot. The $113 federal lodging rate is a floor for many destinations, not a promise. Look up your destination rate before you trust any total, including ours.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a reasonable budget for a family vacation?

It depends on how you travel. In our model, a four night drive and camp trip costs about $777, and a week with flights costs about $3,272. Add attractions, rental cars and bags before you set the final number.

Is driving cheaper than flying for a family of four?

Usually, up to a point. At 76 cents per mile, driving about 2,250 round trip miles costs the same as four average tickets. Extra hotel nights on the road shorten that distance. For a wider look at saving on the road, read our budget travel tips.

What is the cheapest time of year for a family vacation?

We cannot rank months from official data, so we will not guess. GSA publishes lodging rates by month for destinations with seasonal pricing, and BTS publishes fares by quarter. Compare your exact dates in both before you book.

Can a family vacation cost less than $1,000?

Yes, with a short drive, camping and mostly home cooked meals. Our example costs $777 for four nights. Flights and hotels usually push a trip past $1,000. Our guide to traveling cheap covers more ways to cut costs.

How much should a Canadian family budget for a US trip?

Convert the US total at the current exchange rate. At 1.40, our $777 camping trip is about C$1,088. Add nonresident park fees if your destination charges them. For rooms, see how to save money on hotels.
