Bali vs Thailand: Which Costs Less for a Beach and Culture Week?

Leslie Nics for TravelValueFinder.com on official US sources, with entry and safety details checked in November 2026.

Bali vs Thailand cost: which is lower? On official US government rates, Thailand wins by about 8 percent for a week that mixes beach and culture. A week for two costs $3,025 in Thailand and $3,272 in Bali, including Bali’s visa and tourist levy.

The gap changes with your beach. Thailand’s cheapest beach towns cost clearly less than Bali, while Koh Samui costs about the same. One caution: Bali’s rate dates from April 2019, the oldest figure in this comparison.

This page is for travelers choosing between the two for about a week. It prices a mix of beach and culture, and it shows where the answer changes.

  • Is Bali cheaper than Thailand? Not on these rates. A beach and culture week costs about 8 percent more in Bali.
  • Which Thai beach place costs least? Pattaya, at $2,660 for a week for two. Hua Hin and Khao Lak follow.
  • Do I need a visa? Yes for Indonesia. US citizens need none for Thailand on stays under 60 days.
  • Is the Bali rate current? No. It took effect in April 2019, the oldest rate we used.

Bali vs Thailand cost on official rates

This comparison uses the US State Department foreign per diem rates. They are the maximum daily amounts the government reimburses its own employees abroad.

Each place gets a lodging cap per night and a meals and incidentals rate per person. We priced seven nights for two adults sharing one room. The mixed week splits into four beach nights and three culture nights.

Bali is one island, so the table gives it one rate. We applied it to both the beach and Ubud. For Thailand we priced Phuket for the beach and Chiang Mai for culture.

Entry fees count too. Indonesia requires a visa and a separate Bali tourist levy, about 650,000 rupiah per person together. At roughly 17,700 rupiah to the dollar, a recent Bank Indonesia benchmark level, that is about $73 for two travelers.

A week on the sand

Table 1 prices seven beach nights in Bali and six Thai places. Koh Samui costs $3,276 and Bali costs $3,272, a $4 gap. Phuket costs $3,241 and Krabi costs $3,157.

Three Thai places cost clearly less. Khao Lak costs $2,947, Hua Hin $2,905, and Pattaya $2,660. Pattaya costs $612 less than Bali, about 19 percent below.

Lodging and meals pull in different directions. Bali’s lodging cap of $235 sits below Phuket and Krabi at $245 and Koh Samui at $260. Its meals rate of $111 sits above Phuket and Krabi.

Hua Hin shows the other pattern. Its meals rate of $115 is the highest in Table 1, but its lodging cap of $185 is low.

Entry fees tip the closest pair. Before fees, Bali costs $3,199 and Phuket costs $3,241. The visa and levy add $73 and put Bali $31 above Phuket.

If one fee flips the answer, the honest answer is that the two are close.” Leslie Nics, Founder and Lead Travel Writer, TravelValueFinder.com

A week of culture and food

Chiang Mai costs $2,737 for seven nights for two travelers. Ubud, priced at Bali’s rate, costs $3,272 with entry fees. That puts Bali $535 higher, about 20 percent above Chiang Mai.

Bali’s meals rate of $111 sits well above Chiang Mai’s $86. Lodging caps are close, at $235 and $219.

Thailand has cheaper culture bases too. Chiang Rai costs $2,093 for the same week, and Thailand’s Other line for unlisted places costs $1,575.

Pick the beach before the country. The gap inside Thailand is bigger than the gap between Bali and Thailand.” Leslie Nics, Founder and Lead Travel Writer, TravelValueFinder.com

One assumption matters here. The table does not say whether Ubud falls under Bali’s rate or Indonesia’s Other line for unlisted places. If the Other line applied, the week would cost $1,480 with entry fees, and Bali would win.

Both in one week

Our main trip splits seven nights into four on the beach and three on culture. Thailand runs Phuket then Chiang Mai. Bali stays on one island at one rate.

Table 2: Seven nights for two travelers sharing one room, in US dollars.

ItemBaliThailand: Phuket and Chiang Mai
Lodging, seven nights$1,645$1,637
Meals and incidentals, two travelers$1,554$1,388
Entry fees, two travelers$73$0
Total$3,272$3,025
Difference from Thailand$247 higherBaseline

Lodging nearly ties. Bali vs Thailand cost comes down to meals and entry fees. Bali costs $247 more, about 8 percent above Thailand.

Swap Phuket for Krabi and the Thailand week drops to $2,977. Hua Hin brings it to $2,833, and Pattaya to $2,693. Each swap widens the gap with Bali.

Thailand’s two stops sit in different regions, so that week needs a domestic flight we did not price. Bali’s two stops share one island. Adding that flight for two travelers would narrow the gap.

What the numbers leave out

These are government ceilings, not prices. Budget travelers will spend less than any total here.

Bali’s rate took effect in April 2019, and most Thai beach rates date from early 2024. An older rate may understate today’s costs, so the true gap could be smaller or larger. The table also lists one rate all year, so it cannot show peak season swings.

The meals rate covers incidentals as well as food, so it runs higher than a street food budget. Treat it as a ceiling for comparing places, not a daily spending target.

We left out flights, transfers, local transport, activities, and currency moves. Our Thailand cost breakdown covers Thailand’s side, and our Bali budget hotels page lists stays on the island.

Entry, safety, and seasons

Indonesia requires a visa for US citizens, according to the State Department’s Indonesia page. You can apply online through the Indonesian immigration portal, or buy at the airport, where lines can be long.

Your passport needs six months of validity and two blank pages. A free online arrival card through the All Indonesia system is due within 72 hours of arrival. Bali’s levy is separate and is paid through the Love Bali site or at airport counters.

Thailand lets US citizens enter without a visa for stays under 60 days, according to the State Department’s Thailand page. You must register online first through the Thailand Digital Arrival Card portal. Confirm current terms on the Royal Thai Embassy visa page, because entry rules can change.

The State Department rates Thailand Level 1 and Indonesia Level 2, citing natural disasters, unrest, and terrorism for Indonesia. It says violent crime against US citizens has occurred in Indonesia, especially in Bali. Pickpocketing is common, and drink spiking has been reported in Bali.

Tourism safety standards in Indonesia are loosely enforced, and diving and boat safety vary. The department also notes that Indonesia has 127 active volcanoes and frequent earthquakes. Thailand adds increased caution near the Cambodian border and in far southern provinces, which are not on our routes.

Indonesia’s rainy season runs from November to March or April, and its dry season from June to October. Forest fire haze can appear nationally in the dry season. In Thailand, Chiang Mai’s burning season runs roughly February through late April.

Marijuana, CBD products, and some prescription medications are illegal in Indonesia, even with a prescription. Drivers need an International Driving Permit, and motorcycle riders need a helmet. Its criminal code, effective January 2026, penalizes sex and cohabitation outside marriage, but a family member must complain.

The CDC’s Travelers’ Health pages list vaccine and health advice for both countries.

Who should pick which

Choose Thailand if price and simple entry matter most. Its cheaper beach places undercut Bali, and US citizens need no visa or levy for short stays.

Choose Bali if you want beach and culture on one island without a domestic flight. On these rates that convenience costs about $247 a week for two, less any domestic flight you skip.

If timing decides it, check seasons first. Indonesia’s dry season runs June to October, and Chiang Mai’s burning season runs February to April.

Cost and value are different questions. A rate table cannot score what you want from a trip. So I give neither place a value score.

Questions before you book

Why use Bali’s rate for Ubud?

The table lists Bali as one place and does not define its edges. We used Bali’s rate for the whole island.

How old is Bali’s rate?

It took effect on April 1, 2019. Most Thai beach rates date from 2024, and Krabi’s from July 2026.

Do the visa and levy matter?

They add about $73 for two travelers. That is enough to flip the Bali and Phuket comparison.

Can these rates show seasonal price changes?

No. The table lists one rate all year for Bali and for each Thai place.

Is the Bali levy charged on every entry?

The Love Bali FAQ says it is paid once per person while traveling in Bali.

Do both countries require an arrival card?

Yes. Indonesia’s is free and due within 72 hours of arrival. Thailand requires online registration before you arrive.

Why not compare Bali with all of Thailand?

Bali is one island, and Thailand is a country with very different regions. We matched a beach stop and a culture stop instead.
