Cheap places to visit in the USA are mostly small cities and park towns in low price states. Think Hot Springs, Tulsa, Natchez, and Bentonville. Federal travel caps put a room in these places near $113 a night and meals near $68 a day. Nashville’s room cap is $230.

Hot Springs is the only place in Arkansas above the standard federal rate, and only by $2. The room cap is $115, and meals are $68. The national park here charges no entrance fee. It also charges nothing for ranger led tours or the junior ranger program, per the National Park Service. Plan your spending around the town, because the park itself costs nothing.

Bentonville, Arkansas

Bentonville sits at the standard rate. The art museum here offers free general admission, and its trails and grounds are free too, according to its visitor page. It also lists free parking in its campus lot. More than five miles of trails wind through the grounds.

Tulsa, Oklahoma

Tulsa sits at the standard rate. Oklahoma City runs higher, at $121 for a room and $80 for meals. Tulsa’s 66.5 acre riverfront park lists free admission in the state tourism office listing.

Sulphur, Oklahoma

Chickasaw National Recreation Area has no entry fee, per the National Park Service. The park has six campgrounds, and camping runs $20 to $50 a night. Boat launch permits cost $4 a day if you bring a boat.

Natchez, Mississippi

The Natchez Trace Parkway starts near Natchez. It charges no entrance fee and no campground fees, per the National Park Service. You can join the parkway from dozens of roads in Mississippi, Alabama, and Tennessee. Natchez sits at the standard federal rate, and Mississippi has the second lowest state price level in the country.

The Gatlinburg Area, Tennessee

The Smokies charge no entrance fee. You do need a parking tag if you park longer than 15 minutes. It costs $5 a day, $15 a week, or $40 a year, per the National Park Service. On fee free days, you do not need the tag. Check the park’s page for the dates. Gatlinburg sits at the standard rate of $113 for a room, while Nashville’s cap is $230.

What Makes a Place Cheap? Three Numbers You Can Check

Cheap is not a feeling. Three public numbers tell you most of what you need.

The State Price Level

The Bureau of Economic Analysis publishes regional price parities. They compare each state’s prices with a national average of 100. BEA builds the index from consumer prices and housing rents. In 2024, Arkansas was lowest at 86.9. Mississippi followed at 87.0, then Iowa and Oklahoma at 87.8. California was highest at 110.7, per the BEA release. That is a gap of about 27%.

The Federal Lodging and Meals Caps

The General Services Administration sets daily caps for federal travelers. For fiscal year 2027, the standard rate is $113 for a room and $68 for meals and incidentals. That rate covers most of the country. GSA builds lodging caps from hotel market data. Only 295 places have higher caps, per the GSA highlights.

These caps are not market quotes. Still, they work as a fair yardstick for a normal hotel night and normal meals.

The Price of the Main Attraction

The third number is the entry price of the thing you came to see. When entry is free, your daily cost drops fast.

Cities Often Called Cheap: What the Federal Rates Say

Austin and San Antonio show up on many cheap lists. The federal rates tell a different story.

CityRoom capMeals capRoom cap above standard
Knoxville, Tennessee$129$7414%
San Antonio, Texas$149$7432%
Austin, Texas$184$8063%
Nashville, Tennessee$230$86104%

This does not mean you should skip these cities. It means you should budget for what they really cost. For a pricier city done smartly, see our New York on a budget guide.

What a Cheap Day Costs for Two

Here is the daily yardstick for two travelers: one room plus meals for both. It leaves out taxes, gas, and activities.

PlaceRoom capMeals for twoTotal per day
Standard rate towns$113$136$249
Hot Springs, Arkansas$115$136$251
Knoxville, Tennessee$129$148$277
San Antonio, Texas$149$148$297
Austin, Texas$184$160$344
Nashville, Tennessee$230$172$402

Four days in Nashville costs $612 more than four days in a standard rate town. Room taxes come on top, so plan for them.

Here is how the gap grows with trip length. One day means one room night and meals for two.

Trip lengthStandard rate townNashvilleDifference
3 days$747$1,206$459
5 days$1,245$2,010$765
7 days$1,743$2,814$1,071

Getting There

The Bureau of Transportation Statistics reports an average domestic itinerary fare of $428 for early 2026. Two travelers flying would spend about $856.

Driving costs 76 cents per mile at the IRS business rate, which has applied since July 1, 2026. A 1,000 mile round trip works out to $760. Your gas bill alone will run lower, because that rate also covers other car costs.

Passes That Can Cut Your Costs

Some travelers pay less than the posted price. Armed Services and Gold Star Families can get a free lifetime pass to more than 2,000 federal sites. The National Park Service lists that offer on its Hot Springs fee page.

Senior and Access passes cut Chickasaw’s boat launch permits by 50%. None of these passes change a hotel bill, so they help most on park heavy trips.

How to Test Any Town Before You Book

Step 1: Look Up the Federal Rate

Use GSA’s per diem lookup for the town and your dates. If it shows the standard rate, the town is not on the higher cost list.

Step 2: Check the State Price Level

Compare the state with 100 in the BEA tables. A number under 100 means prices run below the national average.

Step 3: Read the Attraction’s Fee Page

Open the official fee page for the park or museum. Look for parking, camping, and boat fees as well as entry.

Step 4: Check Your Dates

Some places change by month. Orlando’s federal room cap rose from $140 to $169 for January through March in fiscal year 2026.

Look up the federal rate before you fall for the photos. The rate tells you what a normal night costs.” Leslie Nics, TraveValueFinder.com

Where Cheap Trips Go Wrong

Free entry is not free everything. The Smokies charge $5 for parking. Chickasaw charges for camping and boat launches.

Fee free days changed in 2026. The National Park Service says they now apply to US citizens and residents only.

State numbers are averages. A pricey town in a cheap state can still cost more than its neighbors. Hot Springs shows this, since it sits above the standard rate in the lowest price state.

A low cap is not a low bill. Room taxes, gas, and meals above the cap all add up. Our Travel Budget Calculator helps you total them, and our Travel Cost Guide shows how we price other trips.

Free entry gets you through the gate. Parking, camping, and gas still send the bill.” Leslie Nics, TraveValueFinder.com
